Deputy Sheriffs are the Law Enforcement division of the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office has 55 deputy sheriffs focusing on patrol, investigations, civil paper service, and providing resources to our schools. The Law Enforcement Division is overseen by a Captain.


The Patrol Division consists of 8 Sergeants and 33 deputies and is responsible for patrolling the 1,000 sq miles of Champaign County, responding to emergency and nonemergency calls for service, investigating traffic crashes, conducting traffic enforcement and serving civil papers. The day to day operations of the Patrol division are overseen by a Lieutenant.


The Investigations Division is comprised of a Lieutenant and 7 Investigators. It is responsible for investigating major crimes that occur in Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction, including having two deputies assigned to the multijurisdictional Street Crimes Task Force.

SALARY & BENEFITS

  • Starting Salary - $64,064
    • $71,718 after 1 year
    • $79,248 after 5 years
  • Earned time off (vacation, personal leave, sick time)
  • Part of a Collective Bargaining Unit
  • Take home squad car (for deputies living in Champaign County)
  • 12-hour schedule with every other weekend off


Lateral deputies can start at up to Year 10 on the salary scale, depending on years of full time experience.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS - ENTRY LEVEL

  • at least 21 years of age
  • high school graduate or equivalent
  • no felony or certain misdemeanor convictions
  • residency in Champaign County or adjacent counties (or willingness to relocate upon hire)

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS - LATERAL (EXPERIENCED)

  • at least 1 year of full time experience as a police officer
  • certification by ILETSB as a full time police officer (or ability to have minimum training waived)
  • no felony or certain misdemeanor convictions
  • residency in Champaign County or adjacent counties (or willingness to relocate upon hire)

HOW TO GET STARTED

ENTRY LEVEL

Deputy applicants with no law enforcement experience are required to take a written test as the first stage of the application process. The exam is offered on an ongoing basis and we do currently have open positions. The exam can be scheduled here: National Testing Network Law Enforcement Exam. Be sure to select the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office in which to apply.


Those who receive a passing score on the exam will automatically be put onto our hiring list for further consideration. Next steps include an oral interview, background check, physical fitness test, psychological evaluation, and medical evaluation. Individuals will be contacted for next steps as positions become available.

LATERAL (EXPERIENCED)

Deputy applicants with at least one year of full time law enforcement experience can forego the entry level written exam by sending a copy of your resume to the Sheriff’s Executive Secretary, Teresa, at tschleinz@champaigncountyil.gov.
